Quilting Bees of the 19th Century
(From the Mining Company Guide to Quilting)

Quilting Bees were important to women of the 19th century because it gave them an opportunity to get together with neighborhood women, something they could not do often because they were so busy and so far apart. It gave them a chance to talk about the weather and talk about the crops. Most importantly,  quilting bees were an opportunity for women to talk about politics. Not only did they talk about political events, candidates and activities, they worked their discussion into the quilts. Political quilts made by the bees showed political elections and political problems that were concerns of these women. This is significant because women of the 19th century did not have the right to vote, let alone express their political ideas. Through the domestic sphere, and activities like quilts these women found a new outlet.

The Bees were also useful in raising money for the troops in both the North and the South during the Civil War. Quilts would be made by the women at the bees and then sold or auctioned off for money. This is was very important and patriotic contribution that middle class women made to the war effort.

Much like the Quilters of old, the East Independence Church of Christ Quilters meet to enhance relationships in Christ while learning or practicing a skill that has carried from one generation to the next. We invite you to come and share in our fellowship and growth that is experienced by a wonderful group of Christians.

The Quilters of the East Independence Church of Christ
meet the 1st & 3rd Thursday of each month.

This is a time of fellowship for old and young alike. If you would like to become a part of this group that is learning an old skill that is still widely practiced, call the Church Secretary (461-0266) for more information!
